Andy Burnham Sworn In as UK Prime Minister, Unveils Plans to Tackle Cost-of-Living Crisis

Andy Burnham has officially assumed office as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, succeeding Keir Starmer after a formal transition of power.

The change in leadership was completed following Keir Starmer’s resignation to King Charles III at Buckingham Palace, after which the King invited Burnham to form a new government.

Addressing the nation outside 10 Downing Street, Burnham acknowledged the economic challenges facing the country and pledged to restore stability, rebuild public confidence, and deliver meaningful support to struggling households.

The new prime minister announced that his administration would begin introducing measures this week to ease the cost-of-living crisis, promising to outline both the relief package and how it would be funded.

Burnham also revealed plans to present a comprehensive 10-year national development strategy later this year, aimed at driving long-term economic growth and improving the quality of life across the United Kingdom.

As part of his government’s agenda, he pledged to reform the education system to help more young people gain employment, expand access to mental health services, and increase the construction of council homes to address housing shortages.

He added that these reforms would help reduce welfare spending in a fair and sustainable manner while ensuring the government maintains fiscal discipline and fulfils its defence commitments to international partners.

Burnham said his administration is committed to building a stronger, more stable Britain and restoring confidence in the country’s future through practical reforms and responsible leadership.
