157 Migrants Rescued After Boat Catches Fire in English Channel
Nearly 160 migrants were rescued after a boat caught fire while attempting to cross the English Channel on Tuesday morning.
French maritime authorities confirmed that 157 people were safely rescued after the vessel’s engine caught fire, causing the overcrowded boat to deteriorate rapidly while in French search and rescue waters.
The rescue operation involved several emergency teams, including French rescue vessels, a French Navy helicopter, two UK Border Force vessels, and an RNLI lifeboat. All rescued migrants are being taken to Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, where they will receive medical care and humanitarian assistance.
Authorities revealed that five migrants had already been rescued from the same vessel hours earlier after requesting help. However, the remaining passengers initially refused assistance and continued their journey toward the UK. Officials explained that forcing people off heavily overloaded boats could increase the risk of a deadly shipwreck.
The incident has reignited debate over dangerous small-boat crossings in the English Channel. According to reports, more than 14,500 migrants have crossed the Channel this year, with increasingly larger and overcrowded vessels being used by people smugglers.
Reacting to the incident, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage renewed calls for stricter border enforcement, while the French government maintained that any attempt by British authorities to return migrant boats to French waters without agreement would violate French sovereignty and international maritime law.
The latest rescue highlights the ongoing humanitarian and border security challenges facing both the United Kingdom and France, as authorities continue efforts to prevent dangerous Channel crossings while saving lives at sea.
