Heatwave latest: Disposable barbecues banned for ‘significant risk’ – as 19 homes destroyed in Stourbridge fire
14th August, 2026 | News
The UK is facing a growing wildfire crisis as hot and dry conditions increase the risk of further fires. Authorities have temporarily banned the sale of disposable barbecues, while the West Midlands has been particularly badly affected.
In Stourbridge, 19 homes were destroyed and up to 300 people, including care home residents, were evacuated. Two people have also been arrested on suspicion of arson in Stoke-on-Trent.
Firefighters across the West Midlands faced an unprecedented workload, receiving more than 1,100 emergency calls in a single day and responding to hundreds of incidents. More than 1,000 wildfires have now been recorded across Britain this year, surpassing last year’s total.
Authorities are urging the public to remain extremely cautious as the heatwave continues.
