Four people have been charged with murder following the death of a newborn baby girl in the Wincobank area of Sheffield, South Yorkshire.

Police were called to the area on Sunday after concerns were raised about the safety of an infant. Despite the efforts of police officers and paramedics, the baby was pronounced dead at the scene.

A post-mortem examination later established that the infant died from stab wounds.

Seven people aged between 15 and 38 were initially arrested in connection with the case. Following investigations, four adults—two men and two women—have now appeared before Sheffield Magistrates’ Court charged with murder.

They have also been charged with causing or allowing the death of a child and perverting the course of justice, following allegations that steps were taken to conceal the death of the infant.

The baby, who has not yet been formally identified, was referred to in court as Baby S.

A 15-year-old girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has also been charged with perverting the course of justice. All five defendants have been remanded in custody and are due to appear before the court later on Wednesday.

Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the newborn’s death are continuing.
