UN General Assembly: Iran, Ukraine, Russia and Falklands Dominate Diplomatic Talks

The 2026 United Nations General Assembly in New York has been marked by a series of major diplomatic exchanges involving Iran, Ukraine, Russia, Argentina and the United Kingdom.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Argentine President Javier Milei addressed key international issues, while the United States announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin had been invited to the upcoming G20 summit in Miami.

Iran President Pezeshkian Calls for Talks

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian responded to comments previously made by US President Donald Trump, saying Iran had been a victim of terrorism following what he described as a US bombing of a school.

Pezeshkian also said Iran was prepared to engage in talks over the conflict but would not accept what he described as “the language of force.”

The remarks came amid continuing tensions between Iran and the United States, with the issue receiving significant attention during the UN General Assembly.

Zelenskyy Raises Concerns Over Foreign Citizens Fighting for Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told the UN General Assembly that citizens from 47 countries had been used to fight for Russia during the war in Ukraine.

He specifically mentioned countries including Ghana, Nepal, Tajikistan, India, Yemen, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Cuba, Belarus, Sudan and South Africa.

Zelenskyy alleged that some people had ended up in Russia through what he described as deception and “tricks.” He also appealed directly to representatives of the countries concerned to address the issue of their citizens.

Ukraine Calls for De-escalation Before Winter

In his UN address, Zelenskyy also warned that continued attacks on Ukraine’s energy and heating infrastructure could make the coming winter particularly difficult.

He said Ukraine would respond if Russia continued targeting those systems, while also stressing the need for de-escalation and diplomacy before winter.

Argentina Renews Falkland Islands Claim

Argentine President Javier Milei used his UN speech to renew Argentina’s claim over the Falkland Islands, describing the territory as a national cause.

Milei also said the population of the islands did not have the right to self-determination.

The United Kingdom subsequently reaffirmed its sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. The UK also said it supported the Falkland Islanders’ right to determine their own political future.

US Confirms Putin Invitation to G20 Summit

Another major diplomatic development came from Washington, where US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin had been invited to the upcoming G20 summit in Miami.

According to the report, the invitation could provide an opportunity for Putin to meet with Donald Trump.

The development adds another significant diplomatic dimension to discussions surrounding the Russia-Ukraine conflict and broader international relations.
