Breaking: Japan orders emergency evacuation of millions
30th July, 2025
Panic has gripped Japan’s eastern coastline as authorities ordered the evacuation of nearly two million people following a powerful undersea earthquake in the Pacific Ocean that triggered a major tsunami alert.

An estimated 1.9 million residents have been instructed to move to higher ground, with waves reaching up to 3 metres already hitting coastal regions from Hokkaido in the north to Wakayama in the south.
In Hokkaido alone, more than 10,000 people have been evacuated. Local media footage captured scenes of residents crowding rooftops and observation towers while emergency sirens echoed throughout the area.
In Chiba, just south of Tokyo, people were seen huddling on an observatory deck, anxiously watching the ocean. Authorities issued urgent warnings: “Do not wait. Move inland immediately.”

The Japan Meteorological Agency has warned that the tsunami could lead to widespread flooding, significant property damage, and potential loss of life if safety instructions are not followed.
Multiple tsunami waves have already battered parts of the Pacific coast, causing extensive power outages, transport disruptions, and panic in various prefectures.
Emergency response teams remain on high alert, and access to coastal areas has been sealed off. The current warning zone spans hundreds of kilometres, covering much of Japan’s eastern seaboard.
