Cold weather health alert issued – as Met Office snow and ice warnings also in force
Cold Weather Health Alert Issued as Snow and Ice Warnings Take Effect
A three-day cold weather health alert has been issued for the Midlands and northern England, as snow and ice warnings come into force across parts of the UK.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) alert runs from 6am on 13 February until 8am on 16 February. It warns that vulnerable people, including the elderly and those with underlying health conditions, could face increased health risks.
Officials say there may also be “minor impacts” on healthcare services due to higher demand during the cold spell.
Snow and Ice Warnings
The Met Office has issued snow and ice warnings for Thursday and Friday covering northern England and much of Scotland.
Forecasters say 1–2cm of snow is widely expected, with up to 10cm possible on higher ground.
Friday is forecast to be the coldest day for many areas:
-
Around 2°C (35°F) during the morning commute in Manchester
-
Around 0°C (32°F) under clear skies in Glasgow
Sky News weather producer Chris England said the drop in temperatures will likely “come as something of a shock after the long mild, wet spell.”
He explained that the jet stream is shifting southwards, allowing colder northerly air to move in and bring more wintry conditions.
However, milder air is expected to return from the south later in the weekend.
Authorities are advising people to:
-
Check on vulnerable neighbours and relatives
-
Ensure heating systems are working properly
-
Take extra care on icy roads and pavements
Further updates are expected as conditions develop.
