Five arrested after alleged assassination attempt on Ecuador President Noboa

Five individuals have been arrested in connection with an alleged assassination attempt on Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa, according to Energy Minister Ines Manzano.

Minister Manzano reported that President Noboa’s convoy was attacked by a crowd of about 500 people throwing rocks as he traveled to Cañar province to unveil new infrastructure projects. Although Noboa was unharmed, officials later discovered bullet damage on his vehicle.

Authorities confirmed that the suspects will face charges of terrorism and attempted murder.

This incident follows a similar attack in September, when roughly 350 people assaulted a motorcade carrying Noboa and several diplomats during a protest in Imbabura province. That group used fireworks, Molotov cocktails, and rocks to ambush the convoy.

The latest attacks come amid widespread unrest in Ecuador after the government announced plans to end a diesel subsidy to reduce public spending. In recent weeks, Indigenous-led protests have blocked major roads and clashed with security forces, resulting in one death and several injuries.

In response to the escalating violence, the government declared a state of emergency over the weekend in 10 provinces, citing “serious internal unrest.”

This is a developing story and will be updated as new details emerge.
