UK weather: Dozens of flood alerts in place across England and Wales amid warning of heavy rainfall
Saturday 29 November 2025
The Met Office has warned of further heavy rainfall this weekend, with up to 30mm expected to fall widely on Saturday and as much as 60mm over higher ground.
Dozens of flood alerts are currently in place across England and Wales. As of midday Saturday, the Environment Agency had issued 35 flood alerts for rivers in England, while Natural Resources Wales had 10 alerts in effect. Flood alerts indicate that flooding is possible.
A yellow weather warning for rain is active for the East Midlands, North East England, and Yorkshire and the Humber. A separate yellow warning for ice will affect large parts of northern England overnight into Sunday.
More rain and warnings ahead
A further yellow rain warning is in place for Monday, covering North West England, Hampshire, South West England, and Wales. According to the Met Office:
-
Up to 40mm of rain is likely across Derbyshire, North West England, and Yorkshire and the Humber.
-
Up to 120mm could fall in isolated areas over the Cumbrian fells.
-
South West England could see up to 50mm across higher areas of Exmoor, Dorset, the Mendips, and the Cotswolds.
-
An amber warning for rain has been issued for South Wales on Monday, with rainfall totals possibly reaching 120mm in some places.
The Met Office warned that homes and businesses may experience flooding, and travel disruption is likely. England and Wales typically receive just over 100mm of rainfall during the entire month of November.
Chief meteorologist Jason Kelly said strong winds and periods of heavy rain may lead to surface water flooding and delays across road and rail networks. Snow is also possible over higher ground in North East England as colder air moves down from the north.
“Sunday will be drier and brighter, though colder, with widespread frost expected into Monday before the next weather system arrives,” Kelly added.
Scotland hit by severe gales
The warnings follow severe overnight gales that caused power outages across Scotland. Gusts reached 83mph in the Western Isles and 75mph on the Isle of Mull, according to Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks.
Around 1,000 homes on the Isle of Mull were without power by mid-morning Friday, though most have since been reconnected. A yellow wind warning covering Orkney, Shetland, and parts of the Highlands and Argyll and Bute expired at 11am on Friday.
Next week’s weather is expected to remain changeable, with occasional dry spells.
