‘Warning lights for a coming war are flashing red – and Britain is not prepared’

A leading security expert has warned that the world may be on the brink of a wider conflict, with most warning signs already in place.
Rob Johnson, director of the Changing Character of Conflict Centre at Oxford University, said around 95% of known indicators that precede major armed conflict are already “flashing red.” He described the lack of preparation by the UK Government as “breathtaking.”
Drawing on historical patterns, including the lead-up to the Second World War, Johnson outlined how nations preparing for war typically expand military capacity, strengthen infrastructure, and shift diplomatic language. He noted that such signs are now visible globally.
According to him, China is steadily building the capability to potentially launch an ആക്രമation on Taiwan, citing large-scale military exercises, rapid defence expansion, and increasingly aggressive diplomacy. At the same time, Russia—despite being engaged in the ongoing war in Ukraine—is continuing to rearm, raising concerns about a possible future confrontation with NATO.
Johnson explained that key indicators include increased troop movements, weapons production, infrastructure development such as transport networks and bunkers, and heightened military drills. In later stages, warning signs can escalate to troop mobilisation and logistical preparations close to targeted regions.
He stressed that while such developments are already visible, the UK has not responded with sufficient urgency, particularly in expanding defence spending or boosting military production capacity. He also called for better public awareness about potential threats.
Comparing the current situation to the late 1930s, Johnson warned that delays in preparation could leave nations vulnerable. He urged governments to shift from observation to action, strengthening defence systems both to deter aggression and to be ready if conflict escalates.
