Yellow warnings for heavy rain prompt fears of flooding

Met Office Issues Multiple Yellow Weather Warnings for Heavy Rain

Sunday 25 January 2026

The Met Office has issued a series of yellow weather warnings for heavy rain, with southern England, Wales and Northern Ireland forecast to be hit by torrential downpours on Monday and Tuesday, raising the risk of flooding and disruption.

The first warning covers central and southern Northern Ireland, including Enniskillen, Omagh and Newry. It comes into effect at midday on Monday and remains in place until 6pm.

Forecasters say intense rainfall could lead to localised flooding, longer journey times, and disruption to bus and train services, with some homes and businesses at risk of flooding.

A second yellow warning begins at 3pm on Monday and continues until midday on Tuesday, affecting south-west England, large parts of Wales, and areas stretching eastwards towards Portsmouth and north as far as Oxford. North Wales and the Welsh west coast are excluded.

The Met Office warned that flooded roads could cut off some communities, while power outages are also possible.

Two additional yellow warnings are in place for Tuesday. One covers southern England, including areas east of Oxford and Portsmouth and the whole of Kent, running from midnight until midday.

Another warning for rain and wind affects Northern Ireland, beginning at 2am on Tuesday and lasting until 9pm.

Met Office chief forecaster Steve Willington said unsettled weather would persist through the week.

“While many areas will experience typical late-January conditions, there is an enhanced risk of impactful weather from Monday night into Tuesday,” he said, urging the public to stay updated as forecasts evolve.

Sky News weather producer Dr Chris England said rainfall totals of 30mm to 80mm could fall in some areas over the coming days.

Meanwhile, in Devon, part of the historic Teignmouth Grand Pier, built in 1865, was washed away during Storm Ingrid, with images showing a significant section of the structure missing.
