168 Reportedly Killed in Strike on School in Southern Iran
At least 168 people, many of them children, have reportedly been killed after three airstrikes hit Shajareh Tayyebeh Elementary School in Minab, southern Iran, according to Iranian authorities.
The school, which had 264 students, was reportedly struck while classes were ongoing. Rescue teams searched through the collapsed building as families gathered for news of their loved ones.
The attack has sparked widespread grief and anger, particularly because no side has accepted responsibility. Iranian officials have accused the United States and Israel, while U.S. officials said American forces do not deliberately target schools or civilians and that an investigation is underway. Israel has not publicly commented on the incident.
Iranian officials said the school had been built on the site of a former Revolutionary Guard base that had reportedly been closed and vacated about 15 years ago.
The tragedy has become one of the most prominent examples of the civilian cost of the escalating conflict between Iran, Israel and the United States.
