UK Borrowing Costs Hit Nearly 30-Year High Ahead of Challenging Budget

The UK is facing a “deeply uncomfortable” fiscal position as government borrowing costs climb to their highest level in nearly 30 years, putting additional pressure on household finances and the government’s spending plans.

The rise in global bond yields, partly linked to renewed conflict in the Middle East and higher oil prices, has pushed UK 10-year gilt yields to 5.24% and 30-year yields to 5.87%.

Economists warn that higher borrowing costs could increase mortgage rates and add billions to the government’s debt-servicing bill ahead of the October 28 budget.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has refused to rule out future tax increases while maintaining his commitment to higher defence spending. Labour officials have stressed the need for fiscal discipline and investor confidence as the government prepares for a challenging budget.
