Trump Escalates Threats Against Iran as Tehran Warns of Retaliation
US President Donald Trump has escalated his threats against Iran, warning that Washington could target the country’s economy or leadership if Tehran fails to reach a deal with the United States.
Speaking to Fox News, Trump said he was considering further military action while also indicating that he could meet Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during this week’s United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Iran has responded with a warning of “painful” retaliation if the US launches another attack, saying American interests and positions across the Middle East could be targeted.
The heightened tensions come amid stalled negotiations and disagreements over the terms of a June memorandum, including sanctions, Iranian assets, the Strait of Hormuz and the US military presence in the region.
The US State Department has also warned Americans of the possibility of further escalation, including flight disruptions and airspace closures.
Meanwhile, oil prices have remained elevated amid uncertainty over regional energy supplies, with Brent crude recently trading above $100 a barrel.
Both Washington and Tehran continue to maintain their positions as the UN General Assembly approaches, raising concerns over a further escalation of the conflict.
