UK Urges Households to Stock Food and Water Amid Rising Security Concerns

The United Kingdom has urged households to keep basic supplies, including food and drinking water, at home as part of preparations for major emergencies such as cyberattacks, extreme weather, infrastructure disruption and potential conflict.

The preparedness campaign comes amid growing concerns across Europe over Russia’s confrontation with Western countries and reports of increasing hybrid threats, including cyber operations, sabotage, drones and disinformation.

The UK government is also working on an updated version of its long-standing contingency planning document, commonly known as the “war book.”

British officials stressed that the preparations are not a warning that war with Russia is imminent. Instead, the government says households should be prepared to cope with serious disruption regardless of its cause.

Poland and Germany have also stepped up security and civil-defence preparations, with officials warning about potential threats to critical infrastructure and NATO territory.

The developments highlight a broader shift across Europe toward strengthening civilian resilience against both conventional military threats and hybrid attacks targeting energy, communications, transport and digital infrastructure.
