UK Orders Urgent Review After Second Undetected Migrant Boat Reaches Kent Coast
UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has ordered an urgent review after a second small migrant boat reached the Kent coast without being intercepted by Border Force within two days.
The latest incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon when a small boat arrived at Samphire Hoe near Dover. Border Security Command detained 21 people following the landing, while authorities said an investigation remains ongoing.
Two Uncontrolled Channel Landings in Two Days
The incident follows an earlier uncontrolled landing at Folkestone on Monday morning, when a dinghy reached the shore without being intercepted.
According to figures cited by the Home Office, uncontrolled small-boat arrivals have been extremely rare. Before this week’s incidents, only one such arrival had been recorded since the beginning of 2023 — in September 2025.
Ms Mahmood described the two recent incidents as “not acceptable” and ordered Border Security Command to investigate how the boats reached the UK without being intercepted.
She said improved monitoring had made uncontrolled crossings increasingly rare but acknowledged that further action was needed.
Home Secretary Raises Concerns Over Smuggling Tactics
The home secretary also said people-smuggling gangs were adopting new tactics, including attempting increasingly long and dangerous journeys across the English Channel.
She said government efforts to prevent crossings were making it more difficult for gangs to launch boats and were forcing them to change their approach.
The Home Office said Border Security Command is conducting an urgent review into this week’s uncontrolled beach landings.
21 People Detained After Dover Arrival
A government spokesperson said Border Security Command officers, working alongside Kent Police, responded to the Dover incident and that 21 people had been detained.
Officials said a thorough investigation was underway and declined to provide further details while inquiries continue.
Meanwhile, French authorities have launched an investigation after a man believed to be a migrant was found dead on a beach in northern France. French media reported that investigators would examine whether the death was connected to an attempted English Channel crossing.
17,784 Migrants Have Crossed the Channel in 2026
According to figures cited in the report, 17,784 migrants have arrived in the UK after crossing the English Channel in small boats so far in 2026.
Of that number, 5,315 arrivals have occurred since Andy Burnham became prime minister in July.
The 2026 total is reportedly 45% lower than at the same point in 2025, although Channel crossings remain a major issue for the UK government and border authorities.
The latest incidents have prompted renewed scrutiny of how small boats are monitored and intercepted before reaching the UK coastline.
