Record number of people arrive on one small boat – but what’s behind fall in Channel crossings this year?

UK Channel Crossings: Record 230 Migrants Arrive On Single Small Boat
A record 230 people crossed the English Channel in a single small boat on Monday, breaking the previous record of 165 set just 20 days earlier.
The latest figure marks the third time in a month that the record for the largest number of people arriving on one boat has been broken. The development has renewed concerns over the increasingly overcrowded and dangerous vessels used by people-smuggling gangs.
Despite the record number on a single boat, overall Channel crossings have fallen significantly in 2026. A total of 15,242 people had arrived in the UK by 9 August, representing a 43% decline compared with the same period in 2025.
July also recorded a new average of more than 72 people per boat, more than double the average recorded in July 2021.
The UK government says it is intensifying efforts to disrupt people-smuggling gangs and is working with France to increase enforcement along the French coast, while also highlighting the need for safe migration routes.
