Arthur Fery Battles Through Nosebleeds to Reach Wimbledon Fourth Round for the First Time
Britain’s Arthur Fery produced a remarkable display of determination to reach the fourth round of Wimbledon for the first time, defeating Belgium’s Zizou Bergs in a thrilling five-set contest.
The 23-year-old wildcard, currently ranked world No. 114, overcame persistent nosebleeds and twice recovered from significant deficits to claim a hard-fought 2-6, 7-5, 2-6, 7-6, 7-6 victory after four hours and 40 minutes on Court 18.
Fery required medical treatment for his nose on three occasions during the match but refused to give up, fighting back after trailing 4-1 in both the fourth and fifth sets before completing a memorable comeback against the world No. 37.
The victory also guarantees Fery a place inside the world’s top 100 for the first time in his career. He becomes only the second British wildcard to reach the last 16 of a Grand Slam since Andrew Foster achieved the feat at Wimbledon in 1993.
Speaking after the match, an emotional Fery praised the home crowd for their unwavering support.
“It’s unreal. Four hours and 40 minutes with that support—it’s unbelievable. I requested to play on this court because it’s awesome. I had a great time here in the second round, but this tops it. The support was incredible,” he said.
Born in France to French parents, Fery grew up just minutes from the All England Club and will now face Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov in the fourth round after Dimitrov defeated Italy’s Matteo Berrettini.
Elsewhere, Serena Williams’ Wimbledon comeback came to an early end after the 23-time Grand Slam champion withdrew from the women’s doubles competition due to a knee injury.
The 44-year-old American, who had accepted a wildcard to partner her sister Venus Williams, said she was “heartbroken” to withdraw after aggravating her knee during her first-round singles defeat to Australia’s Maya Joint.
In another major upset, defending women’s singles champion Iga Świątek was knocked out in the third round by rising Philippine star Alex Eala, who secured a 7-6, 6-2 victory to advance to the second week of the tournament.
Eala will now face 2024 Wimbledon runner-up Jasmine Paolini in the fourth round as she continues her impressive run at the All England Club.
