Young People Blame Political Rhetoric, AI Misinformation for Rise in Racist Online Content
Growing numbers of young people say inflammatory political rhetoric and the rapid spread of artificial intelligence (AI)-generated misinformation are fuelling the rise of racist content and extremist influencers across social media platforms.
Many believe that misleading AI-generated images, videos and posts, combined with divisive political messaging, are creating an online environment where hate speech, racial stereotypes and misinformation can spread more easily and reach wider audiences.
Experts have also expressed concern that advances in AI technology are making it increasingly difficult for users to distinguish between authentic and manipulated content, allowing false narratives to gain traction and influence public opinion.
Young people interviewed on the issue warned that social media algorithms often amplify controversial and provocative content, exposing users—particularly teenagers and young adults—to racist messaging and polarising influencers.
The growing concern has renewed calls for stronger regulation of online platforms, improved digital literacy and greater efforts to combat AI-generated misinformation while protecting freedom of expression.
The issue highlights the increasing challenges governments, technology companies and educators face in addressing online hate and ensuring digital platforms remain safe, accurate and inclusive spaces for users.
