HMRC Refunds Over £50 Million to Pension Savers as UK Sees New Savings Deals and Broadband Expansion

06th August, 2026 | Business | Finance

Thousands of UK pension savers have received tax refunds from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), while savers are also benefiting from improved interest rates on savings accounts and continued expansion of high-speed broadband across rural communities.

HMRC Returns £50.3 Million to Pension Savers

HMRC has refunded more than £50.3 million to over 12,500 pension savers who were overtaxed after making flexible pension withdrawals during the second quarter of 2026.

The average refund exceeded £4,000, reflecting a long-standing issue where retirees are taxed under emergency tax codes following one-off pension withdrawals.

Under the current system, HMRC assumes a single withdrawal will be repeated every month throughout the year, often pushing retirees into higher tax bands than necessary.

Financial experts have criticised the process, arguing that pensioners should not have to reclaim money that was incorrectly deducted in the first place.

Anyone who believes they have overpaid tax can submit a claim using HMRC forms P55, P53Z, or P50Z, depending on their individual circumstances.

New Savings Accounts Offer Competitive Returns

Although the Bank of England recently maintained its base interest rate at 3.75%, competition among savings providers remains strong.

Cahoot has introduced a new market-leading easy-access savings account paying 4.52% AER, replacing previous leaders Chase and Saga. The account allows deposits of up to £500,000 with unrestricted withdrawals.

In the Cash ISA market, Shawbrook Bank now offers the highest easy-access rate at 4.52%, while fixed-rate ISA products continue to provide attractive returns, with some five-year accounts offering up to 4.85%.

Several fixed-rate savings bonds are also approaching 5%, providing savers with more opportunities to maximise returns despite economic uncertainty.

Project Gigabit Connects More Rural Communities

The UK Government has announced that an additional 60,000 homes and businesses across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire now have access to gigabit-capable broadband through its Project Gigabit initiative.

Launched in 2021, the programme aims to deliver faster and more reliable internet services to rural and underserved communities, with more than 750 properties now being connected every day.

Residents can check whether their homes or businesses are included in future rollout plans using the government’s online postcode checker.

TalkTalk Customers to Move to Rise Fibre

Around 120,000 TalkTalk broadband customers will be transferred to Rise Fibre following the company’s acquisition of part of TalkTalk’s customer base.

Rise Fibre has assured customers that broadband speeds, monthly charges and existing contracts will remain unchanged during the transition. Customers can also continue using their current Wi-Fi routers, with no immediate action required.

The company added that anyone experiencing service disruptions lasting more than two days may be eligible for compensation.
