Man Charged with Murder After Death of Nine-Year-Old Girl in Scotland
A 35-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of nine-year-old Minnie Merriman, who was found seriously injured at an industrial estate in Arbroath, Angus, Scotland.
Police Scotland said officers responded to a report at Elliot Industrial Estate shortly after midnight on Monday, where the young girl was discovered with critical injuries. She was rushed to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee but sadly died despite medical efforts.
The suspect, Christopher Rice, from Wakefield, West Yorkshire, was arrested and charged in connection with Minnie’s death. Authorities confirmed that he was known to the victim and her family, who had travelled from West Yorkshire and were camping in the area.
Rice appeared before Forfar Sheriff Court on Wednesday, where he faced a single charge of murder. He made no plea during the hearing and was remanded in custody. He is expected to appear in court again within the next eight days.
In a heartfelt statement released through Police Scotland, Minnie’s family described her as their “beloved, absolutely incredible, beautiful and brave Minnie Moo” and appealed for privacy as they mourn their devastating loss.
Police Scotland said specialist officers are providing support to the victim’s family, while detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Detective Inspector Mike Ness of the Major Investigation Team said officers will remain at the scene as inquiries continue and urged anyone with information that could assist the investigation to contact Police Scotland.
West Yorkshire Police are also assisting with the ongoing investigation.
