92-Year-Old Man Charged with Murder of Wife in Exeter

A 92-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of his 87-year-old wife following an incident at a supported living facility in Exeter.

Laurence Billam, of Millbrook Lane, is accused of killing Shirley Billam, who was discovered dead by police on Sunday, April 19, 2026. Officers had been called to the address around 12:40 PM following concerns for the woman’s welfare.


A “Sad Case”

Devon and Cornwall Police officially named the victim on Tuesday and confirmed the relationship between the two. While detectives initially withheld details of their connection, they have now verified that the pair were husband and wife.

Detective Inspector Guy Biggar previously characterized the investigation as a “sad case,” noting that authorities are not looking for any other suspects in relation to the death.

Legal Proceedings

  • Charges: Laurence Billam faces one count of murder.
  • Court Appearance: He was scheduled to appear at Exeter Magistrates’ Court on the morning of Tuesday, April 28.
  • Family Support: Specially trained officers are currently supporting the couple’s family.

The force has reiterated that the investigation is contained and poses no wider threat to the public.
