Arrest Made Following “New IRA” Bomb Attack in Dunmurry
Counter-terrorism detectives have arrested a 66-year-old man in connection with a car bomb explosion outside a police station in Dunmurry, just southwest of Belfast.
The arrest occurred Tuesday morning, April 28, 2026, following a series of raids by the PSNI’s Terrorism Investigation Unit. The suspect is currently being detained under the Terrorism Act for questioning.
The Attack Timeline
The incident began on Saturday when a delivery driver was hijacked in the Twinbrook area of West Belfast. According to police:
- A device was placed inside the driver’s vehicle.
- The driver was forced to drive the car to Dunmurry Police Station.
- The bomb detonated outside the station while evacuations were underway.
Miraculously, no injuries were reported, though police are officially treating the attack as attempted murder.
New IRA Claims Responsibility
The dissident republican group known as the New IRA has claimed responsibility for the bombing. In a statement provided to the Irish News, the group alleged that the attack was a deliberate attempt to kill police officers as they exited the building.
The PSNI confirmed they are aware of the claim and are continuing to investigate the group’s involvement.
Ongoing Investigation
Forensic investigators remain at the scene, and several searches are still active across the Belfast area.
“We will continue, tirelessly, with our efforts to bring those responsible to justice and to protect our local communities,” a PSNI spokesperson stated.
Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the hijacking or the explosion to come forward.
